JONESBORO (3/1/10) – The 2010 Arkansas State football schedule is highlighted by a home game against Big East Conference member Louisville, features non-conference road games against Auburn, Indiana and Navy and includes six games against teams that were either bowl eligible or competed in postseason play last season.
The Red Wolves open their 2010 campaign Sept. 4 at Auburn, which is coming of an 8-5 year in 2009 that included a 38-35 overtime victory against Northwestern in the Outback Bowl. ASU?and Auburn have met just once before, a 27-0 victory by the Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2006. While the crowd of 78,943 for the 2006 game is currently the 10th largest to ever watch ASU play, it was the sixth largest at the time of the game.
The Red Wolves open up their Sun Belt Conference slate a week later at Louisiana-Lafayette, the first of three consecutive league games that also includes their home opener against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 18 and a trip to Troy Sept. 25 to face the defending conference champions.
Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette are two of ASU’s top played rivalries in school history. Both teams are among the top-five most played by the Red Wolves, facing the Warhawks 31 times and the Ragin’ Cajuns 38. Troy ended last season undefeated in conference play and dropped a narrow 44-41 double-overtime decision to Central Michigan in the GMAC Bowl.
Following ASU’s game against the Trojans, the Red Wolves return home to host Louisville Oct. 2 in its Homecoming game. Arkansas State is 55-26-1 all-time in Homecoming contests and has won seven in a row, including the last six against Sun Belt Conference opponents.
Louisville and ASU?met last year for the first time in school history at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, where the Cardinals pulled out a 21-13 victory in the first game of a home-and-home series. Louisville is one of just two Big East opponents ASU?has ever played. The Red Wolves split a pair of games with Cincinnati, defeating the Bearcats in 1975 before playing them again in 1998. The Cardinals finished the 2009 season 4-8, but will be under the direction of new head coach Charlie Strong during the upcoming season.
ASU will then face North Texas in Denton for its fourth league game on Oct. 9 before stepping back outside conference play the following Saturday at Indiana. The Red Wolves have won the last five meetings against the Mean Green, including a 31-24 victory at Fouts Field in 2005 that secured their spot in the New Orleans Bowl.
ASU will play its first game against the Hoosiers and sixth game against a member of the Big Ten Conference in the history of the program. ASU?will play a Big Ten team for the second consecutive season after dropping a narrow 24-21 decision at nationally-ranked Iowa last season. The Hoosiers will be the fourth Big Ten opponent Arkansas State has ever played, also facing Illinois and Minnesota in addition to the Hawkeyes.
Arkansas State plays four of its final five regular-season games against conference opponents, starting with Florida Atlantic on Oct. 23 in the first of three consecutive games at ASU?Stadium. After their game against the Owls, the Red Wolves will have an open date and then host Middle Tennessee on Tuesday, Nov. 2 in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2. The mid-week contest will be the first of two ASU games currently scheduled for national television in 2010, also playing Navy Nov. 20 on CBS?College Sports. ASU?will play at least two nationally-televised games for the second consecutive season in 2010.
Middle Tennessee completed the 2009 season with a 10-3 record, which included a 42-32 victory over Southern Mississippi in the New Orleans Bowl. ASU will play their home finale Nov. 13 against Western Kentucky on the Red Wolves’ Senior Day, and then plays Navy in the first of back-to-back road games to end the regular season.
ASU will play Navy for the first time in its history, giving it a game against one of the three service academies for the third time since 2005. The Red Wolves will face the Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, setting up ASU’s first game against one of the service academies since defeating Army 14-6 at ASU?Stadium in its 2006 season opener. The Red Wolves dropped a 38-10 decision at Army in 2005 in their only other game ever played against Army, Navy or Air Force.
The Red Wolves conclude their regular season Nov. 27 at Florida International.
